The Center for Studies and Research on Agrosilvic Biodiversity “Acad. David Davidescu” (CSCBAS) is a research unit of the Romanian Academy, dedicated to the integrated study of agricultural and forestry biodiversity, in relation to ecosystem functioning, sustainable development, and the bioeconomy.

CSCBAS explicitly assumes the role of a national benchmark in research on agrosilvic biodiversity, through scientific excellence, interdisciplinary synthesis capacity, and relevance for society and public decision-making. The Center’s activity is focused on fundamental and advanced research, aimed at understanding the relationship between biodiversity, land use, climate change, and economic development.

A defining element of CSCBAS is the development and management of the most important academic database on agrosilvic biodiversity in Romania, conceived as a research, analysis, and decision-support infrastructure. This database integrates biological, ecological, genetic, and agro-economic information and constitutes the foundation for research projects, institutional collaborations, and the expertise provided to public authorities and other beneficiaries.

CSCBAS brings together elite researchers, both staff members of the Center and associated researchers from Romania and abroad, organized within an open, competitive academic community oriented toward scientific and societal impact.

Since 2026, the Director of CSCBAS has been Associate Professor PhD Laurențiu Ciornei, a well-established scientific researcher.

MISSION

The mission of CSCBAS is to produce rigorous and integrated scientific knowledge on agrosilvic biodiversity, to contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of natural capital, and to support, through research and expertise, the substantiation of public decisions and sustainable development strategies.

The Center functions as a synthesis laboratory of the Romanian Academy in the field of agrosilvic biodiversity, transforming data and research results into analyses, models, and tools useful for research, public policies, and society.

Through this mission, CSCBAS strengthens the link between fundamental research, the real needs of society, and major challenges related to climate change, resource security, and the bioeconomy.

OBJECTIVES

CSCBAS structures its activity around clear strategic objectives:

  • the development and operationalization of an integrated academic data infrastructure on agrosilvic biodiversity, serving as a basis for research, projects, and expertise;

  • the conduct of fundamental and interdisciplinary research on agricultural and forestry biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and resilience;

  • the analysis of the relationship between biodiversity, land use, bioeconomy, and sustainable development;

  • the assessment of ecosystem services and the value of natural capital in agricultural and forestry contexts;

  • the elaboration of analyses, synthesis studies, and predictive models to support public decision-making;

  • the consolidation of an academic community of excellence, through the attraction and association of prestigious researchers from Romania and abroad.

DEPARTMENTS

Agricultural Biodiversity

The Department of Agricultural Biodiversity conducts research on the biological diversity of agricultural systems, plant genetic resources, and the relationship between biodiversity, productivity, and the sustainability of agroecosystems. Its activity focuses on agroecological solutions, the functioning of agricultural ecosystems, and the integration of biodiversity into the agri-food chain.

Ecological Restoration and Sustainable Development

This Department approaches biodiversity from the perspective of ecosystem restoration, adaptation to climate change, and sustainable development. Research activities, including those dedicated to the One Health framework, are oriented toward ecosystem services, nature-based solutions, the bioeconomy, and the integration of natural capital into development policies and strategies.

Forest Biodiversity

The Department of Forest Biodiversity focuses on forest ecosystems, their associated biological diversity, and the relationship between forest management, biodiversity, and ecosystem functions. Its activity targets biodiversity conservation, the ecological stability of forests, and their role in adaptation to climate change.
